These scholarships were for pupils domiciled in the Colony, and trustees would be appointed for their proper supervision, which would dispense with the service of lawyers, and this would save expense. It gave him pleasure to announce these gifts; he was particularly pleased to do so to-day.
His Excellency in conclusion paid a glowing tribute to the work done by the noble ladies, and wished them continued success and continued progress on what they had accomplished during the last fifty years.
Bishop Pozzoni in the course of a reply expressed his thanks to the Governor, and eulogised Sir Hormusjee Mody's generosity. He concluded:
To you, Sir, and to Sir Hormusjee Mody, I wish to express the Convent's most grateful thanks for the "Lugard" scholarships.
I am only very feebly voicing the sentiments of the Convent when I say the Sisters feel very deeply grateful for the kind manner you have referred to the institution's work during its fifty years in Hongkong. In the opening pages of the book which, I trust, you will be taking away with you as a memento of the celebrations in connection with the golden jubilee of the Convent the Rev. Mother has already expressed her acknowledgments for all the numerous favours of which the Sisters of Charity have been the recipients for the past half century.
These interesting extracts give us to-day an insight into the Italian Convent's history as well as to the founding of the Lugard Scholarships.
